Park Avenue Church of Christ was established in the early years of the 20th century and has been a fixture in Denison ever since. Earliest records indicate the church began following a Gospel meeting in April, 1903. The church rented a facility until they were able to build on donated land at the corner of Armstrong and Texas. In the 1920’s the church moved to a larger facility just down the street at Armstrong and Hull. This location served the church for nearly seven decades until that facility proved to be inadequate for the challenges and growth anticipated by the leadership. In 1987 God led the church to again move to its present location and name.
The move to Park Avenue was a bold act of faith by the church membership and has proven to be a great blessing to our ministries and purpose. Especially in the last decade, we have experienced steady growth in every aspect of the church - numerically, financially, missions, youth, and in unity of spirit. Growth has been evident as we have recently expanded our parking lot and remodeled the auditorium to accommodate the increasing number. Growth is obvious when we:
Gather together in the fellowship hall for congregational meals
Pack 100+ children in the fellowship hall for youth functions
See the need for another class but have no rooms available
Have to combine adult classes for special events
There is simply not enough space to accommodate us all. With God’s continued blessing and guidance we only anticipate more growth. All this growth has taken place even though there has been little growth in our community. All forecasts call for Grayson County population to expand dramatically in the next decades. We need more space to accommodate us as we are, as well as to position for future growth.
These facts clearly indicate the time has come when we must act to accommodate our current needs and provide for the future. We have a history of acting when God calls us to act and our present church leadership has chosen to act. These needs have led us to commit to building a facility to compliment our existing building that will serve our needs.
A facility that would provide adult and youth classroom space for current and future needs
A facility that would provide a large space for congregational fellowships and youth activities
A recreational area to serve our youth and attract the youth of the community to a Christian environment
Dedicated spaces for classrooms and fellowships that would preserve our current facility
We realize to build this facility will require considerable cost and effort, but if we are to continue to serve the Lord proactively - and we believe we must - there is no alternative.
Realizing we do not want to overburden our church budget once this begins, we have carefully studied and fervently prayed about the benefits of partnering with a stewardship consulting team. Our efforts and prayers have led us to engage RSI (Resource Services) of Dallas, and with their coaching and guidance we will soon begin what is called a “Capital Stewardship Program”. The primary benefit of such a program will be the biblical teaching and spiritual journey in which we all engage. We are excited about the many positive impacts this will have in our congregation both now and in the future!
For over 100 years God has led this church and today we feel his call to respond to his blessing and boldly act in faith to prepare for his ongoing work in the Texoma area.
